JAMES ISLAND — Charleston police arrested a 26-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of an SUV that careened into a grand oak tree known as the Widowmaker in November, killing four of her friends.

Brittney Nicole Roper was charged Jan. 25 with four counts of driving under the influence after investigators received results of a toxicology report and extracted speed information from her 2010 Cadillac SUV, Charleston Police Department Sgt. Anthony Gibson said.

On the night of Nov. 18, just after 1 a.m., Roper was driving four friends in the vehicle when she ran off Riverland Drive just past George Griffith Boulevard and smashed into an oak tree, according to an incident report.
